HUMAN RIGHTS BOOKLET RATIONALE
Article 19: Freedom of expression and opinion |
Cancel Culture

As a whole, this booklet effectively conveys its original intent both in textual and visual formats in a simplistic yet mature style. It seeks to provide viewers with an uncomfortable, chaotic yet controlled visual and informative experience that is similar to people’s description of cancel culture itself. This feeling is generated through the effective use of layering, texture effects and metaphorical graphic imagery (Missing Assets) to produce such a visual impact. This chaotic visual imagery is balanced out through a well-controlled structured layout design and balanced hierarchy, supported by a simplistic yet appropriate typeface’s (Aaux Next and Articulat CF) that elevates the design’s overall appeal and unification. The typeface’s also support the chaotic and uneasy nature of the booklet through the use of transparency and font outline. This also provides the design with motion and energy, drawing readers to the content on each page. Additionally, the booklet is designed in a way that is not entirely linear. It’s split into three chapters that separate from one another, so in a sense, the booklet is designed in a way where the readers can progress each chapter in order or out of order; it is their choice.

The imagery also helps unify the booklet, especially when individual characters are present. The covering of their identity (eyes and mouths), in a sense, dehumanises them, similar to the effects Cancel Culture has on targeted individuals as they are dehumanised online to validate the attack. All visual imagery within the booklet feels appropriate, especially with a grain effect added to all, including the black background, giving the booklet a visual texture and a greater sense of unity through out.

Overall, the booklet is highly effective, both visually and in writing. It achieves the goal of generating a sense of unease and even, at times, self-reflection through a simplistic, controlled, balanced yet chaotic, mature, and dark environment. At its core, this booklet has achieved its goal of representing the adverse effects of Cancel Culture and how it breaks the very essence of Article 19.
